National Museum Of American History

National Museum of
 American History

The National Museum of American History helps the Smithsonian earn the nickname of "the nation’s attic". One can view the momentos of a nation ranging from the flag that inspired " The Star Spangled Banner" to Fonzie’s leather jacket.

Located directly on the Mall, The National Museum of American History is often the next stop after visiting the Washington Monument. In addition to its location, this museum is a great place to start a family’s tour of Washington’s Museums because of the diversity of the collection. Everyone will find something they can appreciate when the exhibits include such items as Revolutionary war cannons, steam locomotives, Muhammed Ali’s boxing gloves, race cars, and Archie Bunker’s chair.

Kids will jump at the chance to participate in either of the children’s activities programs. In Hands on History , open Tues. – Sun. from noon – 3 P.M, kids aged five and up can partake in activities like harnessing a mule or sorting mail as it was done on the late nineteenth century railroads. The other interactive children’s program at the Museum is called Hands on Science, where kids can conduct one of over twenty science experiments.

The National Museum of American History was originally named the National Museum of History and Technology, so there is definitely an emphasis on the scientific developments that helped shape the nation. However, pure history enthusiasts will not be disappointed with over three million objects and artifacts on display. Some of the most interesting exhibits currently on display are "A More Perfect Union: Japanese-Americans and the U.S. Constitution"; examining the WWII internment camps, "First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image" and "Information Age: People, Information and Technology".
