to 10-14-01
Appearing In: 167

的n the Presence of Spirits' African Art from the National Museum of Ethnology, Lisbon will be on view June 10涌ct. 14, 2001, in the museum痴 Level 2 gallery. The National Museum of Ethnology, Lisbon, houses a major collection of African art primarily from former Portuguese colonies, including Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. From large, awe-inspiring fiber and animal initiation masks to small, exquisitely created dolls, pipes, stools, staffs, funerary figures and stele, the objects in this exhibition represent traditions that may predate the arrival of the Portuguese in Africa. This is the first time these exquisite objects from west, central and southern Africa have toured in the United States.

的n the Presence of Spirits was organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, in cooperation with the National Museum of Ethnology, Portuguese Institute of Museums, Ministry of Culture, Lisbon, Portugal. The exhibition has been made possible though the generous support of BP, with additional finding provided by the Instituto Portugu黌 de Museus, Minest駻io da Cultura, Portugal, the Fundacao Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento and the Funda鈔o Calouste Gulbenkian.
